Join us for an immersive 6-week course that combines outdoor sketching with studio development, guiding you from initial visual research to creating a resolved final piece. This course is perfect for all skill levels and provides all the materials you need, including a sketchbook and various drawing tools. You'll begin by exploring the built landscape, focusing on gathering visual information rather than creating finished artwork. Through your drawings, you will describe the city's architectural forms, rhythms, and structures. Each session will cover the basics of drawing, such as texture, line, form, light, and space, with specific weekly focuses. We will break down each subject into a series of short drawing exercises designed to help you intuitively develop your mark-making and drawing skills while challenging your understanding of what drawing is. You will work with various mediums, including charcoal, graphite, ink, gouache, and oil pastels, and receive instruction in using colour to create small colour studies directly from the landscape. Classes will be held outdoors for the initial gathering stage, with an indoor backup planned for rainy days. In the latter part of the course, we will transition to the studio, where you will develop your initial sketches into more resolved works. You will experiment with techniques like mono-printing, collage, and painting, working quickly on several pieces to refine your ideas. This phase encourages the use of diverse media and helps you transform your sketchbook ideas into a coherent body of work. Throughout the course, you will be encouraged to research and integrate other ideas into your work, helping you discover a process for developing your intuitive sketchbook drawings into more resolved pieces. Embrace the journey from observation to creation and discover new ways of seeing and drawing the world around you. exercises designed to help you intuitively develop your mark-making and drawing skills while also challenging your understanding of what drawing is.
