Animating with Zoetropes

Tutor: Cat Bruce

Venue: The Safari Lounge

You will discover the basics of animation, using the historical technique of the zoetrope to create simple hand-drawn animation loops. First we will look at some examples of animated loops and come up with a cyclical movement idea in order to create your own animated loop. You will begin by mapping out your animation in a thumbnail storyboard, and then, working with a range of drawing materials, you will draw your animation on transparent paper. By the end of the session you will have created one second (working at 12 frames per second) of looping animation. As well seeing your animated loops come to life in front of your eyes using the zoetrope, you will digitally capture your frames so that they can be made into video files.
