How far can a drawing stretch before it becomes something else?

When does a line stop being a line and start behaving like an object, a gesture, a trace, or a thought?

Expanded Drawing is a monthly, artist-led workshop series at Look & Draw that treats drawing as an act of investigation rather than a finished thing.

The series is interested in drawing beyond representation — where marks emerge through contact, movement, material testing, repetition, and working with objects or space. Drawing might begin on paper, but it may also move onto walls, into the room, or take sculptural or temporary forms.

Each session is led by a different artist and offers a focused encounter with how drawing operates within their practice. Rather than following a fixed syllabus, Expanded Drawing creates space for experimentation, testing ideas, and working without pressure to resolve outcomes. Sessions may be physical or quiet, structured or loose, collective or individual. What matters is process: drawing as research, drawing as thinking, drawing as encounter.

Expanded Drawing is open to artists and non-artists alike. You don’t need advanced drawing skills — just curiosity and a willingness to work experimentally. Participants may leave with fragments, traces, notes, partial works, or unresolved questions rather than finished drawings.

Pricing & access

These 3-hour workshops are priced to cover artist fees, materials, and studio costs. To keep the sessions accessible, two £20-off places are available per session for artists and those on a low income.

We actively encourage professional artists to join Expanded Drawing as a space for research, testing ideas, and stepping outside outcome-driven work.
