Spaces Available

Thursdays 6.30 - 8.45 pm 29 January- 26 March 2026 Tutor: Jill Martin Boualaxai Objects, Marks, Prints Objects carry traces of use: worn edges, scratches, repairs, surfaces shaped by time and handling. This course uses those physical qualities as a starting point for drawing and printmaking. We begin in sketchbooks with close-looking and fast responses — quick studies, blind drawings, rubbings, surface impressions and small colour notes. These early pages act as a working archive: a bank of marks, textures and observations that you’ll return to as the course develops. You’ll work from a changing selection of studio objects — tools, fragments, ceramics, organic materials and found items — alongside selected artefacts from the Heart of Newhaven’s heritage collection. You’re also welcome to bring a small personal object if there’s something you’d like to explore through drawing. As the weeks unfold, we move from sketchbook research into printmaking, using simple monoprint, collagraph and basic lino processes to extend the drawings and develop a small, connected body of work. The emphasis is on process, curiosity and following what emerges through making, rather than producing finished or “perfect” images. The course is structured but open. Each week introduces practical skills and methods, while leaving space for individual interests to shape the work. You’ll explore: • Drawing approaches to line, tone, texture, surface, form and space • Sketchbooks as a tool for observation, research and development • Rubbings, surface impressions and simple transfer techniques • Monoprinting as an extension of drawing • Collagraph and introductory lino methods • Developing a coherent drawing and print project from research to outcome Sketchbook provided. All printmaking materials included. Suitable for all levels.
