Objects & Memory // From Sketch to Print
Thursdays | 8 weeks
Spaces Available
Thursdays 6.30 - 8.45 pm 29 January- 26 March 2026 Tutor: Jill Martin Boualaxai Objects hold stories — the worn, the broken, the handmade, the functional, the forgotten. This course uses those physical traces as a starting point for drawing and printmaking. We begin in sketchbooks with close-looking: quick studies, blind drawings, rubbings, surface impressions and small colour notes. These pages become your bank of marks, textures and observations — the raw material you’ll return to once we shift into printmaking. You’ll work from a mix of studio oddities (tools, fragments, ceramics, organic pieces, lost-and-found material) and selected artefacts from the Heart of Newhaven’s small heritage collection. You’re also welcome to bring a small personal object if there’s something you’d like to explore. As the weeks unfold, we move from sketchbook research into printmaking — using simple monoprint, collagraph and lino processes to develop a small connected series of drawings and prints. The focus is on process, curiosity and following the threads that emerge through making, rather than producing “perfect” drawings. This course is structured but open: you follow your curiosity, and each week builds the skills to bring your project together. You’ll explore: • Drawing approaches to line, tone, texture, surface, form and space. • Sketchbook research as a tool for developing ideas • Rubbings, surface impressions and simple transfers • Monoprinting as an extension of drawing • Collograph + basic lino techniques • Building a coherent drawing project from research to print. Sketchbook provided. All printmaking materials included. Suitable for all levels.
