Thursdays 6:30 – 8:45 PM 23 April - 18 June 2026 (No Class 4 June) Tutor: Jill Martin Boualaxai Drawing is the simplest way of establishing a visual vocabulary. Making marks on paper holds infinite possibilities, forming the alphabet from which every drawing is built. Central to drawing is the ability to look closely and engage with subject matter, exploring the world visually through mark-making. This eight-week course expands on these fundamentals (texture, form, light, gesture, and space) by introducing tools and approaches for creating a convincing sense of depth and atmosphere on the page. Students will explore how line, tone, rhythm, and negative space can be used to build spatial relationships, whether working from still-life setups, the figure, or the architectural surroundings of The Heart of Newhaven. In the summer, some sessions may take place outdoors when weather allows. Through a balance of short exploratory exercises and longer sustained studies, the course encourages intuitive mark-making, creative risk-taking, and the gradual development of a personal drawing language. All drawing tools and papers are provided; tuition and materials are included in the course fee. Aims Build a strong drawing vocabulary through exercises exploring texture, form, light, gesture, and space. Understand the distinct mark-making qualities of graphite, charcoal, and ink. Translate still-life observations into confident interior space drawings. Develop an intuitive grasp of perspective through drawing architectural details and room layouts. Use layered marks to convey depth, volume, and atmosphere. Synthesise foundational and spatial drawing skills into resolved compositions.
