Thursdays 6:30 – 8:45 PM 7 May - 25 June 2026 (No Class 4 June) Tutor: Jill Martin Boualaxai Drawing is one of the most direct ways of building a visual language. A mark on paper holds endless possibility, forming the basis from which every drawing develops. This eight-week course focuses on developing a confident and flexible approach to drawing, grounded in close observation and an understanding of how marks behave on the page. Working through key elements such as texture, form, light, gesture, and space, you’ll explore how drawings can move from flat surfaces into something more spatial and atmospheric. Using a range of approaches, the course introduces ways to build depth through line, tone, rhythm, and negative space. Sessions will include drawing from still life, the figure, and the architectural surroundings of The Heart of Newhaven, with some classes taking place outdoors when weather allows. Through a balance of short exploratory exercises and longer sustained studies, the course supports intuitive mark-making, creative risk-taking, and the gradual development of a personal drawing language. All drawing materials are provided, and tuition is included in the course fee. Aims • Develop a strong drawing vocabulary through texture, form, light, gesture, and space • Experiment with the mark-making qualities of graphite, charcoal, and ink • Translate observation into confident spatial and interior drawings • Build an intuitive understanding of perspective through architectural detail and layout • Use layering, tone, and repetition to create depth, volume, and atmosphere • Resolve drawings into more considered and sustained compositions
