Expanded Drawing // Surface Impressions
Wed | 11 Feb
Wednesday 11 February 6.30 - 9 pm Tutor: Jill M Boualaxai Expanded Drawing is a monthly, artist-led workshop series that treats drawing as an act of investigation rather than a finished thing. These sessions ask questions such as: How far can a drawing stretch before it becomes something else? When does a line stop being a line and start behaving like an object, a gesture, a trace, or a thought? Expanded Drawing is a space to unlearn habits, test ideas, and work experimentally. Marks may become structures, residues, shadows, or temporary constructions rather than finished images. Each monthly session is led by a different artist and offers a focused encounter with a particular way of working. Sessions may be physical or quiet, structured or loose, collective or individual. What matters is process: drawing as research, drawing as thinking, drawing as encounter. Our first session focuses on drawing as trace — marks made through contact, pressure, overlay, and repetition. Working with surfaces and objects, drawing is treated as evidence that something has happened rather than an image to be completed. Participants will explore how different materials produce marks through rubbing, pressing, lifting, dragging, tearing, and layering. The session moves between individual and collaborative making. You’ll begin by collecting fragments and surface impressions, then bring these into a shared drawing where marks are built up, interrupted, and responded to together. Attention is placed on how drawings change over time as layers accumulate and interact. The session draws on my own art practice and methods developed through site-responsive and object-led drawing, where drawings emerge through shared action rather than pre-planned outcomes. This is a hands-on, process-led session. Expect fragments, residues, and partial drawings rather than finished works. All materials provided. No prior experience needed.
