Expanded Drawing // Surface Impressions

Wed | 11 March

45 British pounds

Wednesday 11 March 6 – 9 pm Tutor: Jill Martin Boualaxai Expanded Drawing is a monthly, artist-led workshop series that approaches drawing as a form of investigation rather than a finished outcome. Each session offers a focused encounter with a particular way of working, where drawing is used as research, thinking, and testing ideas. This opening session focuses on drawing as trace — marks made through contact, pressure, overlay, repetition, and erasure. Working with surfaces, materials, and the room itself, drawing is treated as evidence that something has happened rather than an image to be completed. Participants will explore how marks emerge through rubbing, pressing, lifting, dragging, tearing, layering, and scraping back. Attention is placed on residue, ghost lines, and the way drawings hold the memory of actions over time. The session moves between individual and collaborative making. You’ll begin by collecting surface impressions and fragments, then bring these into shared drawing processes where marks are built up, interrupted, and responded to together. Drawings are allowed to shift, degrade, and accumulate, emphasising process over resolution. The session draws on my own art practice and site-responsive, object-led approaches to drawing, where surfaces, materials, and spatial conditions act as collaborators rather than subjects. This is a hands-on, process-led session. Expect fragments, residues, and partial drawings rather than finished works. This session connects to ongoing research in my own practice around drawing as a way into space, surface, and shared action. These approaches were developed through collaborative, site-responsive work for Ghost in the Machine at Hidden Door, where drawing emerged through contact, repetition, and working directly with architectural surfaces rather than pre-planned images.
