Objects & Memory // From Sketch to Print

Starts 14 Jul
250 British pounds

Spaces Available

Tue - Thursday 10 - 4 PM 14 - 16 July 2026 Tutor: Jill Martin Boualaxai This three-day workshop responds directly to the Heart of Newhaven as both a former school and a site of local heritage. Working with objects from the building, including materials from the heritage collection and the old school spaces, you’ll explore how surfaces, marks and signs of use can be recorded, translated and reworked through drawing and print. What you’ll do Day 1 — Drawing & Gathering You’ll spend the day working in sketchbooks, drawing from objects found within the building. Through observation, rubbings, surface impressions and quick studies, you’ll gather a bank of imagery and marks to work from. Day 2 — Monoprint Exploration Using your sketchbook material, you’ll explore monoprinting as a way to develop and extend your drawings. This stage focuses on layering, testing and discovering what images begin to emerge. Day 3 — Lino Print (Reduction Method) You’ll take your imagery into lino, developing a small series of prints. We’ll focus on reduction techniques, working from a single block to build layered colour prints and explore variation within a set. Across the three days, you’ll move from initial observation to a resolved body of work, gaining a clear understanding of how to take sketchbook ideas into print. You’ll leave with a sketchbook full of research, a series of lino prints, and practical ways to continue developing your work through printmaking. You’ll explore: • Drawing from objects and environments • Sketchbooks as a space for gathering and developing ideas • Rubbings and surface-based techniques • Monoprinting as a bridge between drawing and print • Reduction lino printing and layered colour • Building a small, connected series of prints
