Studio Landscapes // Drawing with Paint

Saturday 10 - 4.30 pm Tutor: Elaine Speirs This workshop is part of a pair of linked Saturday sessions. Each session can be attended independently, or together as a two-part sequence. This workshop works from constructed studio environments made using flowers, patterned fabrics, and linens. Rather than working outdoors, these set-ups allow you to explore landscape and floral painting within the studio, regardless of weather or season. Working from these staged setups, you’ll move between observational drawing, expressive mark-making, and painting, using colour, shape, and composition to build images that respond to atmosphere as much as subject. The session balances careful looking with more experimental approaches, encouraging you to test how materials, scale, and compositional choices affect a painting. The session focuses on observational and expressive drawing as a way into painting. You’ll explore composition through colour, shape, and form, and experiment with materials to develop confidence and understanding in your painting process. Artist references will be introduced to support the work, including Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Joan Mitchell, and Hayley Barker. A range of art books will be available, and you’ll be encouraged to identify artists and approaches that support your own project development. The workshop includes time for making, discussion, and informal group critique, offering space to reflect on work in progress and build confidence through shared studio practice.
